Lisa Cardwell, LMFT

Everyone deserves relationships with acceptance, safety, and support.

My goal is to provide a safe space for you to work through your pain and find a way forward. I have a creative and collaborative approach to working with clients in the therapy room.

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Certified Positive Discipline Parent Educator, a Certified AutPlay® Therapist and the Creative Family Counseling Director of Administration. I enjoy working with clients of all ages and find working with children and parents especially rewarding.

I employ trauma-informed, evidenced-based models and techniques including Play Therapy and creative interventions, cognitive behavioral therapy, solution-focused therapy, motivational interviewing, narrative therapy, and mindfulness to help my clients meet their goals.

I have specialized training in a play and behavioral therapy approach (AutPlay) that helps children who struggle specifically with:

  • attention problems,
  • hyperactivity,
  • emotional dysregulation,
  • Autism-Spectrum Disorders, and
  • other neurodevelopmental disorders.

Because working with parents is a passion of mine, I offer parenting support and education with the Positive Discipline curriculum, teaching parents new parenting tools to tackle their parenting challenges and enrich their relationships with their children.

In addition to helping clients heal from trauma as an EMDR-trained therapist, I also help clients who are addressing the following:

  • anxiety,
  • depression,
  • parenting or co-parenting concerns,
  • past experiences of violence,
  • stress from medically fragile diagnoses
  • child behavioral problems, and
  • building self-esteem.

I believe therapy should be a safe space for healing and growth.

My work is client-centered so your priorities and goals will become mine as we work together.  I have experience working with clients of diverse backgrounds including immigrant and refugee families, people of many faiths, medically fragile youth, and LGBTQ youth and their families.

A native North Carolinian, I attended Catawba College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Religion and Philosophy and Communication Arts. When I felt I was ready for a change in career, I moved to Kentucky to attend graduate school at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. I graduated in December 2015 with dual Master’s Degrees in Divinity and Marriage and Family Therapy. I am currently seeking certification in Play Therapy and am under Play Therapy Supervision with Lacey Ryan, LMFT, RPT-S.

I bring my full humanity into the therapy space so I may meet my clients where they are in life without judgment. I have worked in a variety of settings including school systems and churches, though primarily my work has been focused on providing in-home therapy for children and families over the past 4 years.
